This app allows you to finds words using one required letter and six optional letters, like the New York Times Spelling Bee game. At present, it has two primary features: Find Words and Show Summaries.
Enter letters à la Spelling Bee, and the app will look for words using those letters in the word list of your choice.
These fields mimic how Spelling Bee works.
Required letter: On the Spelling Bee page there is a letter in the middle with a yellow background. Every word you create is required to contain this letter. Enter only one letter in this field.
Other letters: The required letter is surrounded by six other letters on the Spelling Bee page. So enter exactly six letters in this field. In addition to the required letter, valid Spelling Bee words must contain one or more of these six "other" letters (and be at least four letters long).
Choose the word list in which to search for words. If you don't know which one to use, just accept the default. You might also try different lists to see the difference, or use Show Summaries—and check the Include Words option—to see which word list is likely to give you what you need (i.e, the words you're looking for).
What the heck are word lists? See the About page.
Spelling Bee provides a couple of ways to get hints about the words in each day's puzzle: a hints page and a so-called Spelling Bee Buddy app. These grouping options allow you to display words in a way that mimics how those hint tools work. The options are pretty self-explanatory.
Each word is linked to its definition in an online dictionary, which is handy for looking up words you don't know. Choose your preferred dictionary here.
After you click the Find Words button, a Download button is available to export the results of your search.
Choose a format option (json, csv, or txt) and click Download. Note that the screen does not refresh after the download. Just look in your Downloads folder for the data export.
After you enter letters like Find Words, the app will search supported word lists all at once and display a summary of the words it finds in each list. Optionally, you can include in summary the words found in each list.
All the word lists supported by the app are displayed here. There is no option to choose a word list (as there is in Find Words). All word lists are searched and a summary (number of words found, pangrams, etc.) is displayed for each list.
Optionally, you can include the words found in each word list in the list summary. See Include words below.
Also, see the About page for more information on word lists.
Same as Find Words above.
Summaries are always sorted by the number of words found in each word list. You can choose whether the sort is ascending or descending.
Check this box to include all the words found in each word list. This can result in a busier display but, depending on what you're doing, can be quite useful.
Choose how to sort the included words.
Each word will be linked to its definition in the dictionary you select here.
